So, the Cavewoman looks at me this afternoon and says, “I need you to get out of the house for Valentine’s Day. Why don’t you go fishing?!?” Despite my confusion as to whether she needs me out of the house to make my V-day present, or a few hours getting my line wet IS my present, I eagerly said, “OKAY!!!” and lit out of there like Don “The Snake” Prudhomme at a green light.
An absolutely gorgeous day, 78° and sunny without a cloud in the sky … not the best Bassin’ weather, but the breeze putting a slight chop on the surface was sure to help. I tossed about six different baits before picking up my customary Malibu-rigged 5″ Kinami Flash in Mad Melon. First cast with it was a skip under a docked boat. The line just stopped after a one second sink. I reeled down and made a low sweeping hookset and went to war with a husky 3-10 football Bass.
That was the only hit I could manage at this AO, so I moved down the bank to another dock area and casted out right behind the docked boats. About halfway in on the retrieve I feel an almost imperceptible pick-up – often the sign of a big fish. When I was sure she had secured the bait I laid down a huge hookset and found that I had indeed nailed a toad. After several line peels, this 4 pound 5 ounce warrior finally succumbed to the CPR (Catch, Photograph, Release) maneuver.
Again, I couldn’t manage any more love at this spot, despite the Valentine’s overtones of this session. I moved to the other side of the lake for a quick hitter since time was running out on my “romantic” outing. As I was walking to the new area I was passing by an abandoned dock that I don’t usually fish because I, nor anyone I’ve fished with there, have ever had any luck on it. But, a little voice in my head was saying, “Hey! Cave!! Give it a go, man!!!” Luckily, I listened to the little voices in my head, this time! 😆 I flipped my bait up onto the dock on the shallow side and deftly slipped it into the water. Almost instantly, the line went tight. I reeled down and … WHAM! Another epic struggle!! I really felt like this would be the fish of the day based on the battle. But, she weighed in at “only” 4 pounds even.
That was it … three bites, three big connections! I wrapped things up and headed home secure in the fact that, whether or not this was indeed my present, I have already had a Happy Valentine’s Day. Hope you have a great one, too!
